Mike is incapable of translating this brilliantly written French article by Jean-Philippe Quinery, but here is his life story in a few words.
Mike was almost educated at Ottershaw School in Surrey which became slightly famous when Benny Hill used their grounds to film his hilarious TV shows. Expelled at the age of 17 after admitting he hadn't stolen and crashed the bursar's Austin A35 one dark winter's night, he was hired by the Artists & Repertoire Dept of Decca Records in London as an errand boy.
From the outset, Mike established himself as an upmarket errand boy: no running around on bicycles or motor bikes or even the subway .. Mike did all his erranding by taxi; And each parcel was delivered to world famous people - like Vera Lynn, Terry Thomas, Sid James, Benny Hill, Harry Secombe, Frankie Howard, or Elisabeth Taylor.
This was the beginning of Rock n Roll. Mike quickly realized that all Decca's "old" men (i.e. over the age of 35) were completely lost when making rock n roll records. Mike walked into his boss Frank Lee's office one morning and explained that he thought he could be used to stop these old farts making too many mistakes. Frank Lee decided to make Mike a "trainee A&R man" and my job involved attending every single recording session at Decca's West Hampstead Studios and proffering my advice to the producers.
Mike hence contributed to helping the old farts produce records by young newcomers like Tommy Steele, Billy Fury, Marty Wilde, Terry Dene, But while doing so he actuallyh became friends with all the other Decca stars.
